Former Deputy Attorney General running for Supreme Court chief justice – Daily Montanan [1]

Broadwater County Attorney and former Deputy Attorney General for the state Cory Swanson filed Wednesday to run for Montana Supreme Court chief justice.

Swanson made the announcement on the conservative radio show Montana Talks this morning.

“When Montanans go to court, they expect a fair judge who will issue rulings based on the facts and the law, not on ideology,” Swanson told Montana Talks. “I’m committed to being a fair and impartial Chief Justice, who will interpret the law and not legislate from the bench. Montana voters should demand that of every judge and judicial candidate.”

Swanson served as deputy attorney general from 2013 to 2014 and went on to serve in the Montana Army National Guard. He started working as the Broadwater County Attorney in 2015 and was deployed last year while serving in this position, with Lewis and Clark and Gallatin counties assisting in his absence, according to Lee Enterprises.

Swanson could not be reached for comment.

Former federal magistrate Jeremiah Lynch out of Missoula County is the only other candidate in the race after former state auditor John Morrison ended his campaign earlier this month. Current Supreme Court Chief Justice Mike McGrath chose not to run for re-election.
