Louisiana Governor’s Mansion chickens to remain in residence through transition – Daily Montanan [1] ['Piper Hutchinson', 'More From Author', '- December'] Date: 2023-12-22 Gov. John Bel Edwards’ chickens will remain in residence at the Governor’s Mansion even after their owner leaves office. Edwards intended to take the chickens with him back to his home in Amite at the end of his term next month, but he has decided to leave them after Gov.-elect Jeff Landry asked to keep them during a tour of the mansion grounds, Edwards told the Illuminator. When asked whether he will miss the chickens, Edwards gave a characteristically pragmatic response. “Yeah, but I’ll get some more,” Edwards said. “Every now and then you have to get new chickens anyway.” The chickens and their coop are relatively recent additions to the Governor’s Mansion grounds. Edwards added them in 2016 shortly after he took office, paying for the coop and the hens out of his own pocket, according to The Advocate. The hens provide eggs for the first family. Sources close to the governor say Edwards is known to visit and feed the chickens during particularly stressful days on the job. The official transition of poultry ownership will take place on Jan. 8, when Landry is sworn in as governor. The chickens did not respond to multiple interview questions about their new owner.
