Montana Public Service Commission announces new executive director – Daily Montanan [1] ['Keila Szpaller', 'More From Author', '- January'] Date: 2024-01 The Montana Public Service Commission announced Friday the appointment of David Sanders as its new executive director. The PSC described Sanders as a fourth-generation Montanan with more than three decades of experience in federal, state and local government. The executive director will serve as the agency’s chief administrative and fiscal officer and director of communications, the PSC said. It said he will supervise internal operations, including public information, and oversee the budget. The PSC is made up of five elected commissioners, currently all Republican, who regulate monopoly utilities. PSC President James Brown praised the appointment. “Mr. Sanders brings a wealth of experience in public sector agency management to the Commission,” Brown said in a statement. “His expertise in making government agencies more results-oriented, effective, and efficient will be invaluable to the Commission as we continue the ongoing efforts to improve the Commission’s operations for the benefit of all Montanans.” The PSC created the executive directorship in response to an earlier legislative audit that said it was “falling short in administrative matters.” The first and most recent executive director the PSC hired was Brad Tschida, a former Republican legislator. Tschida left the job in September 2023 after a little more than eight months. Sanders’ salary was not available from the PSC on Friday, but the agency had hired Tschida at $90,000. Sanders’ resume also was not available by early Friday afternoon. However, in its announcement, the PSC said Sanders previously served as a member of the Senior Management Team of the U.S. Department of Transportation, or the DOT. “He was also the chief executive of one of that agency’s operating administrations with important safety, regulatory, economic, and environmental protection responsibilities,” the PSC said. Sanders earlier served as the staff director of the Subcommittee on International Economic Policy and Trade of the U.S. House of Representative’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, according to the PSC. “Sanders also served as a management consultant specializing in designing and building performance management and performance improvement systems for federal, state, and local government organizations,” the PSC said.
