Wolf hunting and trapping quota met in eastern Montana – Daily Montanan [1] ['Blair Miller', 'More From Author', '- January'] Date: 2024-01 Wolf season in eastern Montana came to an end Sunday evening after the five-wolf quota for the regions was met last week, according to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. Regions 5, 6 and 7, as well as Wolf Management Unit 313 near Yellowstone Park, will now be closed to hunting and trapping wolves for the remainder of the season. The quota in WMU 313 is six wolves, while there is a five-wolf combined quota for the three regions. An FWP dashboard shows the fifth wolf in Regions 5, 6, or 7 was a male taken with a trap last Thursday afternoon in Deer and Elk Hunting District 525. All five wolves killed in the three regions came from Region 5, and two of them were trapped after trapping season in Regions 1-5 opened for wolves on Jan. 1 following a court order. FWP’s wolf harvest dashboard showed there have been 197 wolves killed this season by hunters or trappers. General hunting season runs from Sept. 15 through March 15. Trapping season started Nov. 27 in Regions 6 and 7 but was delayed in the other regions to Jan. 1 by a federal judge who cited the risk of trapping threatened grizzly bears as a reason for the delay. The trapping season runs until Feb. 15 in Regions 1-5 and in Blaine, Hill and Phillips counties. The full quota for wolves in Montana this season is 313 – reduced from 450 previously. Regions 1-4 remain open to hunting and trapping, though there have already been 12 wolves killed in Region 4, which has a quota of 15 for the season.
