Former Billings Republican state senator suspends eastern congressional campaign • Daily Montanan [1] ['Nicole Girten', 'Blair Miller', 'Keila Szpaller', 'Daily Montanan Staff', 'More From Author', '- April'] Date: 2024-04 Former state senator and Republican Ed Walker announced Friday he was suspending his campaign in Montana’s eastern congressional district. The Billings businessman leaves a crowded field vying for the Republican nomination in Montana’s second district, with eight candidates still in the race. Walker said in a statement his objective in entering the race was ensuring the eastern district stayed in Republican hands. “Between Rep. Rosendale’s indecision about his own candidacy and the overly crowded primary field, it has been difficult for a grassroots conservative candidate to gain any traction in this race,” Walker said. He hopes other candidates in the race will also drop out to consolidate support around a single person, “ensuring Montana’s eastern district is not represented by a Bush-era retread or a California phony in perpetuity.” Remaining candidates in the Republican primary include: Montana’s former U.S. Rep. Denny Rehberg Outgoing State Auditor Troy Downing Outgoing Superintendent of the Office of Public Instruction Elsie Arntzen Miles City state Sen. Ken Bogner Ric Holden, a former Glendive legislator Former Sidney legislator Joel Krautter Former DEA agent Stacy Zinn Billings pharmacist Kyle Austin Democratic candidates are Kevin Hamm, Ming Cabrera and Steve Held. Election day for the primary is June 4.
