Angelina “delved into nine cases of missing women, exposing omissions by police and the judiciary [...] to reveal that almost half of the thousands of annual reports of missing persons end up being confirmed as ‘absence’ cases – while suspicions of sex trafficking remain,” the judges wrote in the award certificate. Her findings were picked up by at least 21 Uruguayan publications, with major Latin American media giants such as Infobae and El País amplifying it to vast Spanish-speaking audiences. Additional coverage of her investigation reached Spain, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay and Venezuela, published across 34 media outlets. The investigation was also highlighted by the Global Investigative Journalism Network and the Journalism Centre on Global Trafficking, Get our free Daily Email Get one whole story, direct to your inbox every weekday. It takes a special kind of reporter to shake people out of their apathy. Angelina is that reporter. “Her rigorous, deeply-reported, beautifully told stories on the disappearances of young women in Uruguay is a timely and inspirational reminder of the power of journalism." Angelina beat 32 other submissions to win the award, which is organised by UN Women, Unesco, the local feminist group Cotidiano Mujer and the Center for Archives and Access to Public Information. Judges gave special mentions to four local journalists Nausícaa Palomeque and Matilde Campodónico (Lento magazine), Guillermo Draper (Búsqueda weekly) and Tomer Urwicz (El Observador news website). Angelina’s missing women investigation has also been longlisted by the One World Media Awards in the New Voice category. Shortlisted candidates will be announced on 8 May, with the award ceremony held in London on 19 June.
