Announcing a PLOS Climate Mini Collection: ‘Coping with Hydroclimate Extremes in the MENA region’ [1] ['Jamie Males'] Date: 2024-05-30 12:18:36+00:00 PLOS Climate is pleased to announce a forthcoming Mini Collection of articles on the theme of “Coping with Hydroclimate Extremes in the MENA region: Patterns, Mechanisms, Impacts, and Resilience Strategies”, with an expected publication date of early 2025. This Mini Collection will be guest-edited by Dr Ahmed Kenawy (Instituto Pirenaico de Ecologia, CSIC, Spain), Dr Ali Darvishi Boloorani (University of Tehran, Iran), Dr Mohamed Meddi (Higher National School of Hydraulics, Blida, Algeria), and Dr Ammar Abulibdeh (University of Qatar, Qatar). The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is characterized by its climate diversity and intricate hydroclimate patterns, rendering it susceptible to a spectrum of extreme events including droughts, flash floods, heatwaves, sand and dust storms, and tropical cyclones. The aim of this Mini Collection is to assess the complex dynamics of these hydroclimate extremes, and to explore historical patterns, atmospheric mechanisms, and underlying processes governing these extremes, considering the influences of both natural climate variability and human activities. In terms of content, the Mini Collection will include original Research Articles, Reviews and Opinions that advance understanding in the management of hydroclimate extremes in MENA. Additionally, the Mini Collection will examine the diverse socio-economic consequences of hydroclimate extremes on communities, infrastructure, ecosystems, water resources, agriculture, and food security throughout the MENA region. Emphasis will be placed on exploring mitigation efforts through resilience-building measures and adaptive strategies, encompassing traditional knowledge systems, policy frameworks, institutional mechanisms, technological advancements, and community-based approaches. Submissions may employ various methodological approaches, including interdisciplinary frameworks, empirical studies, modeling, remote sensing, GIS analysis, and socio-economic assessments. The overarching goal is to foster constructive discourse, collaborative efforts, and information sharing to enhance resilience and adaptation to hydroclimate extremes in the MENA region, ultimately contributing to sustainable development and climate resilience in this region.
