Test your knowledge of LGBTQI+ history [1] ['Noelani Kirschner'] Date: 2024-05-31 19:31:29+00:00 Pride Month, celebrated in June, honors the contributions of LGBTQI+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex) people to society. This year’s celebration marks the 50th anniversary of Kathy Kozachenko’s historic election to the Ann Arbor City Council in Michigan on April 2, 1974. She was the first openly LGBTQI+ person elected to public office in the United States and never hid her identity during her campaign. “Both candidates supported gay rights. But 10 years ago, or even three years ago, lesbianism would have meant automatic defeat,” Kozachenko said at the time. Ann Arbor is planning to build a statue in front of City Hall in honor of her contribution to U.S. history. Kozachenko’s election came just five years after patrons of the Stonewall Inn rioted following an attempted police raid at the popular gay bar in New York’s Greenwich Village. The event catalyzed a nationwide movement that enabled LGBTQI+ people to live more openly and paved the way for political candidates like Kozachenko and Harvey Milk. An openly gay man, Milk won a seat on San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors three years after Kozachenko’s victory. Take our interactive quiz to learn more about how Kozachenko, Milk and others advanced the movement for LGBTQI+ rights in the United States.
