L’École normale supérieure (ENS) est un établissement supérieur pour les études prédoctorales et doctorales (graduate school) et un haut lieu de la recherche française. Elle accueille quinze départements d’enseignement et de recherche qui couvrent l’essentiel des disciplines littéraires et scientifiques. L’ENS est à la fois une grande école, par son recrutement sélectif, et une université de recherche. Elle est un acteur central dans la formation des élites françaises et depuis plus de deux siècles, elle est le foyer d’où sont sortis la plupart des grands mouvements intellectuels du XXe siècle. Sa contribution à l’excellence scientifique française est considérable. Ses performances de formation distinguent l’École normale supérieure parmi tous les autres établissements français. Elle compte parmi ses anciens élèves les récipiendaires des huit médailles Fields françaises, de treize prix Nobel et de la moitié des médailles d’or du CNRS.

The École normale supérieure (ENS) is an elite higher education institution (graduate school) for advanced undergraduate and graduate studies, and a prestigious French research center. It encompasses fifteen teaching and research departments, spanning the main humanities, sciences and disciplines. The ENS is at once a grande école, due to its selective recruitment process, and a research university. As a central actor in the training of French elites for more than two centuries, it has nourished the majority of the great intellectual movements of the 20th century and has considerably widened the scope of French scientific influence. The impressive achievements made possible through the training it dispenses, distinguish the École normale supérieure from all other French establishments of higher learning. Former students include all eight French winners of the Fields Medal, thirteen Nobel Prize winners and half of the recipients the CNRS Gold Medal.
