American service members’ remains returned from Papua New Guinea [1]

The U.S. Embassy in Papua New Guinea and the Department of Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) fulfilled America’s promise to the families of fallen World War II service members at a repatriation ceremony for remains of American service members at Jacksons International Airport in Port Moresby, Oct. 14. The remains were transported in an Air Force C-17 back to the DPAA laboratory in Honolulu for identification. Chargé d’Affaires Joseph Zadrozny visited the crash site two weeks earlier and observed how the DPAA team— in partnership with the National Museum and Art Gallery of Papua New Guinea and the people of Papua New Guinea—worked together to recover and respectfully process the remains. This is the first repatriation ceremony since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. More than 3,200 American service members remain missing in Papua New Guinea to this day.
