The United Nations International School of Hanoi (UNIS Hanoi) is a not-for-profit IB World School and one of only two United Nations international schools in the world. Founded in 1988, UNIS Hanoi is a private, co-educational day school that offers an English language program from Early Years (age 3) through Grade 12. UNIS Hanoi was the first international school established in Vietnam and is one of only two United Nations (UN) schools in the world. Our mission is: Guided by UN values, we inspire all learners to strive for academic and personal excellence and empower them to create positive, sustainable impact. As a school, we embrace the values of Community, Curiosity, Integrity, Courage, Diversity and Responsibility.

Organization: The school operates under an agreement between the United Nations Development Program and the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training. The school year has two semesters: mid-August to mid-December, and from January to mid-June.

Curriculum: The curriculum is international, drawing upon English language programs and the framework provided by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). Known for its rigor, the IB is an inquiry-based program that nurtures curiosity and helps students develop international-mindedness in a truly multicultural environment. Students in our elementary school undertake the Primary Years Program (PYP), students in grades six to ten study the Middle Years Program (MYP) and students in grades 11-12 study the IB Diploma Program. Thanks to the school’s experienced IB faculty, UNIS Hanoi is internationally recognized for its strong academic outcomes, with graduates awarded IB Diploma grades that continue to be higher than the world average. As one of only two UN Schools in the world, UNIS Hanoi has embedded the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into the curriculum and uses the SDG to create a framework for our flagship service-learning program. Instruction in world and home country languages, the arts, physical education, and English-as-an-Additional Language supplement a rigorous core curriculum. UNIS Hanoi has a learning support and counselling program at all grade levels. There is an extensive co-curricular program of sports and non-sports activities and a strong commitment to service learning, reflecting the spirit of the UN ideals and principles. The school has a fully resourced library and media center and has a strong commitment to integrating technology throughout the curriculum with a one-to-one personal computer tablet program for all students in grades 2-12 and mobile computer labs for students in early years-grade 1.

Faculty: In the 2022-2023 school year, UNIS Hanoi has 317 total staff including 206 teachers, 59 of whom are U.S. citizens, 56 host-country nationals, and 91 third-country nationals.

Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year, enrollment was 1,154 (early years 3-5: 545; 6-8: 264; and 9-12: 326). Of the total, 157 were U.S. citizens, 239 were host‑country nationals, and 758 were third-country nationals. The students were dependents of the UN and the diplomatic, business, and NGO communities stationed in Hanoi.

Facilities: Students’ learning is further enhanced by state-of-the-art facilities set across nine hectares of land in the heart of Hanoi. Students, faculty, staff and parents have access to maker spaces, spacious classrooms, all-weather swimming pools, courts, fields, fully resourced libraries, and tech support. Additionally, body temperature scanners and high-tech monitoring tools that measure air quality and heat have been installed to help keep the community safe from extreme weather conditions.

Finances: In the 2022-2023 school year, UNIS Hanoi’s revenue is primarily from school fees with a small amount of other income including an annual U.S. government grant. Annual tuition rates are as follows: early years (age 3/4): $12,570. (full-day)/ $14,370 (extended day; kindergarten: $22,850; 1-5: $28,315; 6-8: $29,925; 9-10: $31,880 and 11-12: $33,880. The school also charges non-refundable application fee of $400 per child, an enrollment fee of $1,200 (one-time); and an annual capital fee of $3,000 per child for K-12 ($1,500 for early childhood (age 4), and no fee for early childhood (age 3).
