Abu Dhabi, UAE: American Community School of Abu Dhabi: 2022-2023 Fact Sheet [1] [] Date: 2023-02 The American Community School of Abu Dhabi (ACS) is a nonprofit American standards-based curriculum school serving approximately 1,200 students in KG1 through grade 12 who represent more than 80 countries. Founded in 1972 and led by our mission, vision and core values, we deliver excellence in our four pillars: academics, the arts, athletics and service learning. The school year comprises of two semesters extending from late August to December and from January to June. Organization: The school is governed by a board of trustees, comprised of 11 voting members. Eight members are elected by the ACS Association, which is comprised of staff and parents of children enrolled in the school, and three members are selected by the elected trustees. Elected members serve for terms of two years. Officers of the board are elected by the board of trustees. Curriculum: The curriculum is similar to that of U.S. suburban public and private schools through grade 8. From grade 9, the curriculum is college preparatory. Instruction is in English. Spanish, French and Arabic are taught as foreign languages. A full program of extracurricular activities is offered, including sports, drama, band, chorus and dance, and various fine arts options and service opportunities are also available. An integrated technology curriculum, with a wide selection of elective courses, is offered in the middle and high schools. The IB Diploma Program also is offered as an option in high school. The school is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Faculty: In the 2022-2023 school year, ACS has 235 total staff including 135 teachers, 71 of whom are U.S. citizens, 0 host-country nationals, and 64 third-country nationals representing 19 countries. In addition to their degree, a certificate in Education is a must. Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year, enrollment was 1,207 (PK-5; 538, grades 6-8; 264, grades 9-12; 407). Of the total, 648 were U.S. citizens, 59 were host-country nationals, and 500 were third-country nationals. Facilities: The school has 100 classrooms, two media centers, two multipurpose rooms, a fabrication lab and a refurbished health center. There are counseling centers in each school division. The school also has special facilities for creative and visual arts, science, music, drama and dance. Facilities also include a 400-seat auditorium with a black box, a cafeteria with fully furnished kitchen, a kiosk and a specialty/health bar. All areas are well-maintained. The indoor areas are all properly air-conditioned. Two gymnasiums and two outdoor artificial-turf sports fields serve the students and sports programs. One field has a five-lane, rubberized running track. The elementary school has three age-appropriate, shaded outdoor playground areas. The 25-meter swimming pool was reconditioned in 2016-17, with new coating and full shading. The new elementary building for grades 4 and 5 was built in 2016. The upper elementary playground and main entrance was completely refurbished in the summer of 2016. A new outdoor, shaded amphitheater was built in the center of the campus in 2016. Finances: In the 2022-2023 school year, about 99% of the school’s income derives from tuition. Annual tuition rates are as follows: KG1: $13,384; K2–grade 5: $20,048; grades 6-8: $20,275; and grades 9-12: $24,245. A one-time capital fee of $6,301 is levied to every newly enrolled student in KG1 through grade 12. (All fees quoted in U.S. dollars.)
