Jerusalem, Israel: Jerusalem American International School: 2023-2024 Fact Sheet [1] [] Date: 2023-10 The Jerusalem American International School (JAIS), a branch of the Walworth Barbour American International School in Israel, is a private, secular, coeducational school for international and local students in preschool-grade 8. For students in grades 9-12, a Weekly Boarding Program is available at our other campus. JAIS fosters a student-centered environment characterized by supportive relationships that inspire students to achieve academic potential, think creatively, show initiative, assume responsibility, develop a passion for lifelong learning, and contribute actively to society. The Jerusalem branch of WBAIS was founded in 2001 and continues to grow yearly. The school year comprises four quarters, extending from August through June. Organization: Ultimate responsibility for JAIS rests with the Executive Board that is registered as a nonprofit corporation operated out of Delaware. A member of this Board chairs the JAIS Advisory committee. JAIS operates under the auspices of WBAIS, is included in its accreditation process. JAIS received full accreditation from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools Curriculum: The school’s curriculum is based on both American and international standards (AERO/CC+). Instruction is in English. There is no religious instruction, but the diversity of the community and the international context of JAIS are recognized and used to enhance the understanding and inclusion of others, through our daily actions and our Jerusalem Studies and Advisory programs. The preschool program focuses on language development, social skills, and beginning math concepts as well as developing responsibility and self-sufficiency. Some preschool students also begin to read and write. The elementary and middle school programs offer English language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, art, music, world languages, PE, environmental science, responsibility & action, Jerusalem Studies, makerspace and weekly swimming instruction in the campus pool. JAIS has small class sizes, enabling individualized attention to personal progression. Students integrate their learning with the media of MacBook laptops and iPad. Students participate in field work and community service projects, as well as regular celebrations of learning, either in class or with the wider school community. Educational, Emotional, and Wellbeing Support: JAIS welcomes diverse learners. Students requiring extra support should communicate their individual needs from the start of the process, so that JAIS can assess if the school can accommodate or enhance offerings in order to welcome and serve all needs of the students. This support interweaves with the advisory program, which integrates social and emotional development into the core of the learning community. Faculty: In the 2023-2024 school year, JAIS has 38 total staff including 36 teachers, 17 of whom are U.S. citizens, 1 host-country nationals, and 18 third-country nationals representing UK, Canada, South Africa, Spain, France, Mexico and Hong Kong. All teaching staff have a minimum of a B.A. and are fully credentialed. Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year, enrollment was 135. Of the total, 53 were U.S. citizens, 25 were host-country nationals, and 57 were third-country nationals representing. Facilities: JAIS is located on a secure educational campus. Facilities include 14 well-equipped and inviting classrooms with SmartBoards, library, computer lab, science lab, art room, music room, sensory room, individual learning rooms, indoor swimming pool, auditorium, outdoor theater, outdoor play spaces, and athletic facilities. One of the faculty who was previously a Registered Nurse assists in the additional medical facilities on campus. An after-school activity program is available for students requiring a longer school day. The campus is in a quiet and pleasant neighborhood, with easy, free parking, a few miles from the city center. Students can ride the private school bus from all areas of Jerusalem. Finances: In the 2023-2024 school year, a majority of the school’s income derives from tuition. Annual tuition rates are in shekels. The shekel amount and approximate dollar equivalent are as follows: PS: 54,500 NIS K-Grade 4: 79,100 NIS Grades 5-8: 90,800 NIS Grades K-8 Pay a 5,000 NIS annual capital fund expense and a one-time registration fee of 10,000 NIS. Transportation fees are 15,000 NIS, and English language learner fees are 17,500 NIS. These fees are payable by check in Israeli shekels, credit card, or U.S. dollars converted to NIS at the exchange rate on the date of payment.
