Mexico City, Mexico: The American School Foundation: 2023-2024 Fact Sheet [1] [] Date: 2023-10 The American School Foundation (ASF) was founded in 1888. The school’s mission statement reads: “The American School Foundation, A.C. is an inclusive and diverse community, offering an international, academically rigorous, university-preparatory curriculum based upon the best of American independent education. In all aspects of life, we strive to be at our best: we love learning, live purposefully, and are empathetic, responsible, contributing citizens in an increasingly interconnected world.” ASF works to cultivate diversity and celebrate achievement, especially in the areas of academics, the arts, athletics, community service, and entrepreneurship. ASF offers an educational program from early childhood (age three) through grade 12 for qualified students of all nationalities. The school year is composed of two semesters extending from mid-August through mid-December and early January through mid-June. Organization: The school is governed by a 15-member board of trustees elected for three-year terms by The American School Foundation. Foundation membership is open only to U.S. citizens living in Mexico. A nominal membership fee is charged and the school has been designated a tax-exempt organization in the U.S. and Mexico. The school is accredited in the U.S. through Cognia and the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS). ASF has special agreements with Mexico’s Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP) and the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), under which students’ studies may be certified in order for them to transfer to other Mexican/Latin American schools and universities. Curriculum: ASF offers a U.S. college-preparatory program and the opportunity to meet all requirements for U.S. and Mexican university admission. Instruction is in English, with extensive Spanish options offered as well. ASF expects all students to become bilingual. ASF is an IB World School. ASF’s Early Childhood Center and Lower School follow the IB Primary Years Program. About a quarter of the graduating class will complete the full IB Diploma, and many more will receive IB certificates for their coursework. ASF also offers a rich assortment of Advanced Placement courses at the Upper School level, giving students the opportunity to challenge themselves and earn university credit. About a third of our graduates attend colleges and universities in the United States, with the rest attending universities in Mexico, South America, Europe, Asia, and elsewhere. Faculty: In the 2023-2024 school year, ASF has 525 total staff including 288 teachers, 78 of whom are U.S. citizens, 191 host-country nationals, and 19 third-country nationals. Our faculty and staff representing the Mexico, USA, Canada, Venezuela, Australia, United Kingdom, Uruguay, Ecuador, Honduras, Czech Republic, Sweden, Republic of Congo, Italy, Bolivia, Greece and Portugal. Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year, enrollment was 2,588. Of the total, 794 were U.S. citizens, 1,471 were host-country nationals, and 323 were third-country nationals. Facilities: The school occupies a 14.6-acre campus on the west side of Mexico City. There are 16 buildings, including administrative offices, the early childhood center, the lower school (with a MakerSpace), the middle school, the upper school, a cafeteria, a snack bar, a covered pool, an underground parking lot, a bus transportation center housing 78 buses, a football field with outdoor track, other athletic fields, two multipurpose gyms, a fine arts center, and a wellness center. Finances: Annual tuition fees for 2023-2024 are as follows: early childhood: $231,350 pesos; grades 1-5: $274,250 pesos; grades 6-8: $296,300 pesos; and grades 9-12: $302,750 pesos. Annual registration fees are as follows: early childhood: $46,270 pesos; grades 1-5: $54,850 pesos; grades 6-8: $59,260 pesos; and grades 9-12: $60,550 pesos. A one-time admission fee of $7,000 U.S. dollars is charged to all students. (All fees, except the admission fee, quoted in Mexican pesos.)
