Actions to Impose Additional Visa Restrictions in Response to Anti-Democratic Actions in Guatemala [1]

The United States stands with those seeking to safeguard democracy and rule of law in Guatemala. Under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, we are taking steps to impose visa restrictions on eleven individuals for undermining democracy and the rule of law. This brings the total recent visa restrictions imposed under this authority to 25, and the United States will continue to take steps to impose such restrictions on additional individuals who continue to undermine Guatemala’s democracy.

The United States unequivocally rejects continued, brazen efforts to undermine Guatemala’s peaceful transition of power to President-elect Bernardo Arévalo. This includes Public Ministry officials’ plans to file charges against President-elect Arevalo and Vice President-elect Herrera, as well as members of the Semilla party and other opposition members. We also condemn the politically motivated raids and arrests targeting members of the Semilla party.

These repeated and egregious anti-democratic acts undermine Guatemala’s democratic institutions and threaten the stability of Guatemala and the region as a whole. We join the Organization of American States in calling for a transfer of power that respects popular will, is consistent with the Inter-American Democratic Charter, and adheres to the rule of law in Guatemala. The Guatemalan people have spoken. Their voices must be respected.
