Verite News joins more than 900 nonprofits in city-wide day of giving [1] ['Terry Baquet', 'More Terry Baquet', 'Verite News', '.Wp-Block-Co-Authors-Plus-Coauthors.Is-Layout-Flow', 'Class', 'Wp-Block-Co-Authors-Plus', 'Display Inline', '.Wp-Block-Co-Authors-Plus-Avatar', 'Where Img', 'Height Auto Max-Width'] Date: 2024-05-07 It’s Give NOLA Day! Today we join more than 900 nonprofits across the city in celebrating 24 hours of giving in support of creating a thriving community for all. You’ll see Verite News listed among other local nonprofits because, like other organizations focused on social services, arts and culture, education and more, Verite News is a public service that needs the support of our community. At Verite News, we’re dedicated to uncovering the truth about issues that impact our community; issues such as inequality, criminal justice and housing. We dig deep on these pressing matters through stories like a recent investigation by Verite reporter Richard Webster in partnership with ProPublica that explored how Louisiana’s plan to lock people up longer imperils its sickest inmates. He tells the stories of those affected like Janice Parker, whose son, Kentrell, had been paralyzed for more than a decade and can’t survive without constant support. While in the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, Kentrell was confined to a dark room as punishment for complaining about his care, leaving him unable to call for help if he needed it. Or through stories like this look at the lack of protections for New Orleans renters by Verite fellow Lue Palmer, after their own bathroom ceiling caved in after four months of slowly falling apart. We’re also dedicated to uplifting the authentic history and traditions of our city. We celebrate our city and its people through our Back in the Day series, which highlights people and events in New Orleans that made a mark on our city, state and country. This includes people like gospel great Mahalia Jackson and the way thousands in our city mourned her in 1972. This is critical work — by providing in-depth reporting and advocating for change, we strive to build a more just and equitable city for all — which is why we keep it free for all to read. But it’s not free to produce. As a nonprofit we rely on support from readers to fund our work, and we need your help to keep our content available for all. Here’s how you can help: Make a donation!
