Madison School Board member Maia Pearson running for 78th Assembly District [1] ['Abbey', 'Abbey Machtig'] Date: 2024-06 Maia Pearson, a lifelong Madison resident who was reelected to the Madison School Board earlier this month, is running for the Wisconsin Assembly in the 78th District. Pearson announced her candidacy on social media Wednesday. She has been on the Madison School Board since 2021, is the current vice president and was reelected in early April to another three-year term. If elected to the Legislature, Pearson said she aims to finish out her current term on the School Board but likely wouldn’t seek reelection as a board member in 2027. “Although this is a great opportunity to really impact state legislation, I still want to make sure that I set up the new superintendent for success, as well as help with that transition,” she said Thursday. The 78th District includes parts of Madison, Monona, McFarland, Fitchburg and Blooming Grove. “As a Madison native, a working mother, a community organizer and as a school board member, I understand firsthand the challenges our communities face,” Pearson said in a social media video. “We need leaders who will take this opportunity presented by the newly balanced Legislature to confront the issues that have gone unaddressed for far too long.” Pearson is a program manager at the Mann Educational Opportunity Fund, which provides mentoring and financial assistance to select high school students from the Madison School District each year. Rep. Shelia Stubbs also is seeking the 78th District seat. Stubbs formerly represented the 77th District but was drawn into the 78th District by new legislative maps signed into law in February.
