This text includes characters that require UTF-8 (Unicode) file encoding:
♄ ♃ ♂ ☉ (astronomical symbols)
œ (oe ligature)
α β γ δ ... (Greek letters)
† (dagger)
If any of these characters do not display properly, or if the apostrophes and quotation marks in this paragraph appear as garbage, you may have an incompatible browser or unavailable fonts. First, make sure that the browser’s “character set” or “file encoding” is set to Unicode (UTF-8). You may also need to change your browser’s default font.
The most commonly used symbols are explained in the author’s introduction:
♄ (Saturn = fruiting)
♃ (Jupiter = perennial)
♂ (Mars = biannual)
☉ (Sun = annual)
† (dagger = plants known only from imperfect specimens)
The symbol ♀ occurs in a few species names as a substitute for the word “Veneris”. The astronomical symbols will have mouse-hover identifications on all occurrences.
All asterisks and question marks are in the original text. Missing periods (full stops) have been silently supplied; all other typographical errors have been corrected and marked with mouse-hover popups. Corrections from the author’s Errata list are similarly marked.
The Errata from the original text are shown at the end of the e-text. All sources that could be identified are also listed.
