But my Mother and maternal Grandmother were both avid Cubs fans. (They watched EVERY game together.) Dad was a Sox man. So I happily rooted for both teams. I am the only one I have ever met that did that--openly root for both Cubs and Sox. But as a kid, it got me taken to twice as many ballgames. There was a rare day when I was 16, just got my drivers' license, when the Cubs and Sox were both home on the same day. They were both absolutely terrible teams then. The Sox offered free admission to anyone who came to their game with a Cubs ticket stub from that day (the Cubs, of course, played a day game). So I loaded up a carful of friends and we went to both games. It was amazing. Both Cubs and Sox won, too. Must have been huge odds against that happening in that era. But when lucky enough, we got to see our fair share of Sox games too, including in the great Bill Veeck era. I don't *hate* the Sox, but am really pleased to see such an undisputably solid team taking this far. I actually couldn't stand all those who filled the Wrigley Field stands to excess whenever the Cubs became contenders, having seen mucho games in the 70's where the attendance was literally 600 people. But the bright side of that was that, as a youngster, I could walk up to the box office and buy a first-row box seat ticket along the visitors' outfield bullpen, and collect lots of sun and autographs...one cool memory of that era was when I was sitting there when the Pirates where in town...John Candelaria was only up in the majors for a couple of weeks, but still a prankster...at the behest of the famously LSD-imbibing pitcher Dock Ellis, John took my game program during the game, signed it and passed it down the whole bullpen bench -- a prohibited move, as you're only supposed to sign autographs before and after the game.
