It was just opened last summer and was the home of the infamous Guns-n-Roses "riot". We saw Reggae Sunsplash here last night (6/21/94) and checked it out. The place is pretty much symetrical, so make sure you know what side of the parking lot you come in from, because they both look exactly the same at night unless you have some knowledge of navigation using the constellations. Overall, I'd give this venue a solid "Pretty Good". Lots of place to wander around inside, much like Shoreline. The lawn is about the size of Deer Creek's while the pavillion seems to be about Shoreline size (pretty big). The pavillion is covered by a flat corrugated steel roof ( have fun, Cutler ! ). The sound overall was suprisingly good, though - even at the back of the lawn. There security staff is made up of lower to mid twenties aged folks who enjoyed the show as much as anyone else inside. We even saw a few of them trying out there new ceramic bong! At Reggae Sunsplash, there were vendors in the plaza area selling reggae-oriented goods like clothes, incense, and cleverly disguised paraphenalia. We can only hope they do something like this for the Dead next year. The parking lots look like they could get a little warm, as they are made of fresh, black asphalt. Parking was $5. Most of the hotels listed for Maryland Heights are quite a hike from the venue. They are closer to Lambert Airfield than to Riverport. The closest hotel to the venue is the Doubletree Club Hotel Riverport which is adjacent to the parking lot. The Hampton, Drury Inn, Best Western, Marriot, etc are over by the airport. There is also a Motel 6 ($31.99) in the same hotel cluster that is not on the Dead's list. If you have any other questions, get in touch with me at ... GuzmanT@sysa.c-engr1.siu.edu . 0
