Recently the pace and � 쿭iversity of this activity has increased until it seems that� 퀁emarkable events have become almost commonplace. � � � 쿟he "UFOlogist" went to Puerto Rico, and with the generous � 쿴elp of noted UFO investigator and "Enigma!" magazine editor� 쿕orge Martin, met and interviewed witnesses to some of the � 퀁ecent unusual events on the island. � � � 쿌ccording to Martin, the recent upsurge in sightings began � 퀇ith an underground explosion near Lajas in the southwest [ � 쿾art of the island ]. � � � 쿙ear Lajas is Laguna Cartagena, a small body of water of � 퀅ncertain depth, polluted from agriculture runoff and � 쿶llegal sewage drainage. The lagoon is unusual in several � 쿪spects, not the least of which is its shape: from the air, � 퀃he grassy border of the lagoon looks uncannily like a map � 쿽f the United States. The lagoon is also known for its large� 쿪nd unusual waterfowl population, some species of which are � 퀅nique to the lagoon. � � � 쿑or years, people living near the lagoon have witnessed � 쿫alls of light coming and going from the water. Then, in � 쿹ate May 1987, the phenomenon began to change. � � � 쿌t 10:30 p.m. on May 30, a large red buzzing ball of light � 퀇as seen descending into the lagoon. At 2:00 a.m. May 31, � 쿾eople in the area were awakened by a blinding white light. � � � 쿟hose brave enough to go to their windows saw a huge disc � 퀂haped object with brilliant lights circle slowly over the � 퀇ater, as if looking for something. � � � 쿟he following afternoon at 1:55 a huge underground � 쿮xplosion followed by a tremor shook the area. Cracks opened� 쿶n the ground and cobalt blue smoke issued from them. � � � 쿟he first reports from seismic stations placed the � 쿮picenter of the earthquake directly under Laguna Cartagena � 쿪t a depth of 8100 feet. Later, news reports stated that � 퀃he epicenter had been in the ocean between the southwest � 쿬oast and Mona Island, in contradiction to what the official� 퀂eismic report had said. � � � 쿌s if an earthquake followed by blue smoke wasn't jarring � 쿮nough, residents whose houses bordered the lagoon were � 쿯orcibly evacuated by members of the U.S. military in grey � 쿓UMVEEs and tan four-wheel drive vehicles sporting radarlike� 퀁otating antennae on their tops. � � � 쿌s they were being herded away from their homes, residents � 퀂aw men in what appeared to be decontamination suits � 퀂weeping the ground with long-handled devices reminiscent of� 쿺etal detectors and taking samples of water, plants, mud � 쿪nd grass. � � � 쿟he next day many reported seeing a helicopter with a long � 쿬hain descending from it. On the chain was a large ball � 퀇hich appeared to be some sort of instrument package. This � 퀇as slowly lowered into the lagoon. � � � 쿌t 10:30 the following evening -- and for three consecutive � 쿮venings thereafter at exactly the same time -- witnesses in� 퀃he area saw a strange flying dumbbell come in from over the� 퀂ea and hover over the lagoon. It was described as a � 쿺etallic cylinder with large balls of greenish-white light � 쿽n the ends and a beaconlike red and blue light on its � 퀅nderside. � � � 쿔n the days following the explosion, reports of UFO � 쿪ctivity in the area increased dramatically, but possibly � 퀃he most interesting thing reported to be flying over the � 쿹agoon during that time was an airplane the size of a � 쿬ommercial passenger jet which made a low pass over the � 쿹agoon as if giving a tour to its putative passengers. � � � 쿟hus began the most recent -- and active -- era of UFO � 쿮vents in Puerto Rico. Subsequent days were filled with � 퀁eports of multiple sightings of UFOs, bigfoot-like � 쿬reatures, landings, entity encounters, abductions, grass � 쿬ircles, animal mutilations and Marian apparitions. � � � 쿥ith the entire range of UFO activity represented and � 쿯lourishing on the island, Puerto Rico seems to be a � 쿺icrocosm of the worldwide UFO phenomenon. Why? The island � 쿶s characterized by diversity geologically, � 쿬limatologically, demographically. It has long been a land � 쿽f social experiments, from its status as the first United � 쿞tates Commonwealth to the "Operation Bootstrap" of poet/ � 쿾resident Luis Munoz Marin. � � � 쿛erhaps it's the scene of another experiment, controlled � 쿬ontact with an alien culture. Or perhaps it's the scene of � 쿶ntentional illusion to that effect.
