ambition -------- A slight recap before I jump into my larger points: So I'm leading this group that's supposed to be on "artificial intelligence and cultural computing" but, being the luddite that I am, a lot of what I'm trying to do is push back against what I see as the new battleground for centralization and the accumulation of computational capital it's not like I think machine learning, broadly, is inherently evil or destructive but I *do* think the current push for bigger and bigger models on larger and larger datasets is anti-thetical to the ideals of permacomputing, is inherently capitalistic, and will only server to centralize power in the hands of a few but just being negative isn't going to do the job, instead what I need to do is try to articulate what a good future would be, what it would be mean to actually use this technology in a positive and responsible way and that's where things get interesting: I don't think there are a lot of people doing this work right now but maybe I'm in a position to try and make connections to the people who are. I'm in the smolnet, I'm putting my foot in the door in a lot of machine learning communities, and I'm going to have some kind of institutional backing that will give me some authenticity. Maybe we can make this happen?
