They're both EOL and haven't had a security patch in a while, but 7 was patched for a few years later than XP.

I've had good luck running my old DOS BBS environment in XP Lite, a cut-down version of XP. Doesn't have much except for the classic GUI. Load the unofficial SP4 patch (all of SP3 plus the patches from XP Embedded, which got patched a few years after XP's EOL date) and I felt like I had a secure-enough system for light use.

XP Lite idles in around 150 mb of RAM, too - making it nice for running in a virtual machine.
