I consider that movie and Jurassic Park to be the pinnacle of using practical effects with some moderate CGI type stuff to produce a really breathtaking, suspension-of-disbelief cinematic experience. For both of those films, their direct sequels fucked up the equation and relied too much on CGI, like everything else since. It sucks.
