WARNING: Language. Another rant. lol. New job. Techie for govt. This is why we can't have nice things. Seriously, I was interviewed and lauded on my ability to streamline things. "That's something we need," they said. I've never seen a system as bad, ugly, or bloated as Filemaker Pro... or at least the dumbfuck configuration it's hosting at work. From crApple's Claris division... although the edition is old enough that there's no Claris in the About section. But I don't blame FMP. I blame the dumbasses who designed the forms/database. 1. Fucking hideous. Grayscale with bits of color (mainly red) jolting in to highlight how poorly-made this monstrosity is. I stare at white-on-black text in monospace and I think this system is hideous. Let that sink in on how bad that must be. 2. Fucking inefficient. We have a web form for users to fill out. They need to provide specific information. They do... in a textarea... that isn't connected to the forms we need. Most of the time is spent copying, verifying, and pasting. Absolutely stupid. I point this out. Boss says "Our programmer starts to complain that this will take 60+ hours and require a budget." No. Fucking. Shit. Had they done it right the first time (not really the current goon's fault, although she didn't help much), we wouldn't need a massive rebuild to make the taxpayers pay me to sit around pressing Ctrl+C, (clicks), Ctrl+V. Never mind that this shit should be in some Excel document and not some fruity FMP "Layout." I started this job last week. I did not have access until over a week after I started. I still don't have access to everything I need. This ball of shit rat's nest I'm working with has multiple ways to do the same thing and they all suck ass. Best part? I have write access to shit I have no business having write access to and I don't have +r to the stuff I need to read. Ostensibly a directory, I HAD, not could, HAD to write a new row. The dumbfuck who programmed it made it mandatory. I got in trouble. But so did my dumbass trainer who wasn't supposed to be teaching me to use that dir anyway... it's just cobbled together bullshit with a ton of departments. It's a massive, heaving rat's nest of shit. 3. Fucking dumb. I touched on the rwx issue. That's dumb. But for the love of fuck, the fields are so fucking ghetto that you can't just press Enter on the "dropdown" (which is more like a text field with hits after you start typing). No. That just selects it. That doesn't actually populate the data you need from it. You have to put the text cursor at the end, THEN press Enter. My favorite is the Copy Field button from the results of the second Enter. That isn't copy-able. You have to click a button. And when you click the copy button, it opens that "dropdown" I was talking about earlier. Other best part: fucking dumb supervisor, dumb trainers (one is cool and smart, the other is a micromanaging nightmare who thinks "Return" is the same as "space") who get pissed because I'm using the wrong font... because emails need to be in Font at Size. It's fucking important. I was actually just using plain text. F U C K I N G L O L It is the Movie 43 of database and case management. That is the best analogy I can create. Another one is when I helped a poor guy who was entering a page break as a bunch of returns... before I helped him. What a shitshow. And I have at least 6 more months of this BS. At least I got paid to sit on my ass for 8 hours a day for a week before I had to experience this load of horseshit.
