Warning(?): Web Design Retrospective I was revisiting Web Pages That Suck[0] and looking at Flanders' lengthy article on the biggest mistakes in web design. Unfortunately the entire site is showing its age and lack of upkeep by basically having no images to speak of and its latest update being March 2016. I'm not sure if Flanders passed away or not, as his Twitter, when I last looked, was over around the same time. The site still basically works, though, so that's nice. Anyway, I got linked to an article[1] from 2006 about CSS. It's pretty interesting seing someone talk about the next-gen things in 2014. It's now further from 2014 than 2006 is. I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think XForms browsers ever took off. IDK. The page makes it seem like the author was hyped up on AJAX and XHTML. I don't think anything other than porn that started with an X was very successful on the web, but what do I know? Misunderstanding #2 definitely made me think of Gopher and how it's great for limited bandwidth like mobile usage. It's also pretty interesting seeing someone worried about print views. I mean I still have an @media print CSS file, but I've never seen anyone really talk about it as an issue. All mine does is basically turn my webpages to black and white. I can't say I totally agree with the article, either, especially on alt text. Honestly one of the funniest things was discovering Joe Clarke's blog[2] and his (un?)intentionally-hilarious rants. I definitely love his passion for accessibility. Maybe people read my writings and have the same reaction. I don't know, but he's quite the character, although I honestly haven't read much of it. But most of all, it made me simply appreciate that Gopher does the heavy lifting when it comes to layout... for the most part. It's sad but I have seen people abuse gophermaps and make mystery meat navigation in Gopher, but thankfully those are few and far between (Come to think of it, I've really only seen one). I mean technically you can do the same thing on HTTP, but having the ability to create a space without a webpage is awesome. Menus and content: That's what Gopher does![3] 0. http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com/biggest-mistakes-in-web-design-1995-2015.html 1. http://blogoscoped.com/archive/2006-06-23-n15.html 2. https://blog.fawny.org/ 3. https://yewtu.be/0_2ADWBZgS8
