WARNING: Rant, language Why can't we have nice things? So probably over a decade ago at this point, I was very interested in digitizing my book library. I painstakingly scanned and converted my books to ebooks, with varying success. But I finished, and I never had to worry about scanning books/documents again... Well, not quite. Today I was doing some cleaning and I found, among other things, some old books that had some beautiful photographs. I had purposefully avoided trying to digitize these as messing with true pictures and OCR is just not good. Now I do have a "wand" scanner. It's pretty horrible just because it is reliant on my calm coordination and flat, smooth surfaces, neither of which can be found much in scanning books. It really is a pain. I looked it up back then and there was a service that would convert your books to ebooks, but they'd literally take your book and rip it apart to make the scanning much, much easier. It's that ridiculous to convert books to ebooks. But anyway, I got annoyed after looking at some of the sHAkY and angled scans I was getting. There has to be a better way. And there is. Flatbed scanners are great for individual pages, provided you press well enough. It's how I did it way back when. The problem? That all-in-one printer is no longer with my family. Why is that a problem? Because it was the only one that could scan directly to USB. Yeah, trying to deal with printer software and all that nonsense was bad enough back then. Now? You have so many hoops to jump through. Since I'm using GNU/Linux, just toss the idea of company scanner software out the door. It's garbage that it still exists like that in 2023. Also scanner companies being dildos and acting like Scan to USB might as well be Scan to Floppy Disk is fucking annoying, too. I found a scanner that looked promising called the CZUR Shine Ultra. It's basically a camera on a stand that has some impressive OCR software... software I can't use because fuck you, Linux user. I know there is other scanner software for Linux out there, but I've never tried. And holy fuck do I just not want to deal with trying to hook up a printer to my PC. It seems like a lot of installing. The great thing about Scan to USB is that it just works. It scans the item and puts it on a USB drive. That's it. No bullshit. It just works. That's how it should be. Yet for the life of me I can't find a damn printer that has that and is also a flatbed. It's all page-feed garbage which is nice for loose paper, but not ideal for fucking books that are kind of attached to things and thick. I guess you have to get some expensive AIO machine for that. WTF? I mean I know the printer industry is scammy with their refill ink/toner nonsense, but give me a break. TL;DR: I can't find a scanner that has two properties without breaking the bank: has a Scan to USB option and is a flatbed. Also company scanner software doesn't work on Linux because of course it doesn't.
