Captain's Phlog 2020.05.06 ___________________________________________________ If you've not read Tracy Kidder's book "The Soul of a New Machine" [1] you owe it to yourself to do so. It remains one of my favorite works. I mention it now because there is a bit in there that is germane to this post. If I recall, DEC salesmen were warning potential customers about the cheeky upstart Data General. The result of course was that everyone wanted to know what DG's phone number was so they could "make sure they never called them". This was how I felt when I heard various environmental groups railing against the Jeff Gibbs / Michael Moore film "Planet of the Humans" [2] as reported in The Guardian. Naturally I wanted to see just how blasphemous this thing was with my own eyes. If social scientists can have fans, I've been a BIG fan of Mayer Hillman for quite some time. He has nothing to do with this film, but he offers a similar tone. Two years ago he said "We're doomed. The outcome is death, and its the end of most life on the planet because were so dependent on the burning of fossil fuels. There are no means of reversing the process which is melting the polar ice caps. And very few appear to be prepared to say so." I concur. I've posted other entries that stake out my position. However "Planet of the Humans" is the first product I've come across intended for truly public consumption. Watch it and see what you think. Cake or Death? May you, and everyone you love, stay safe & well. [theNumberSixtyTwo]connolly[CircleA][GoogleMail] [1] http://www.ancientgeek.org.uk/ed/The_Soul_of_a_New_Machine.pdf [2] https://youtu.be/Zk11vI-7czE
