# A full, rich day in Toledo, Ohio ## Sat, Jul 19, 2014 Walking, shopping at the farmers market, lunch at a coffee shop, gardening, brewing beer, and enjoying great music in Uptown. I started the day, making French press pot coffee with Bea's Blend coffee beans that we buy at the Toledo Farmers Market on Saturdays. The press pot is our primary method to make coffee at home. Occasionally, DD uses the Aeropress. If we have leftover coffee, I pour it into an ice tray. I've been drinking the hot press pot coffee with two or three ice cubes added, which smooths the taste. No need for anything additional. It's fine for the summer time even with our cool temps. I treadmill-walked for 45 min while watching the movie Matrix Reloaded, which I have never seen before. I've watched the first Matrix movie many times. Thus far, the second one does not measure up to the first, but that's not a surprise. ### Dog Walking I walked Barney around our West Toledo neighborhood. ![](https://scontent-sjc2-1.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-ak-xpa1/10514047_599551986830482_2145759736_n.jpg) Barney was excited to meet a buddy, named Bandit. ![](https://scontent-sjc2-1.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-ak-xpf1/10561097_476231425854402_2012358906_n.jpg) The sycamore trees were shedding. ![](https://scontent-sjc2-1.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-ak-xfp1/10546903_545270992261624_243624332_n.jpg) ### Farmers Market ![](https://scontent-sjc2-1.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-ak-xpf1/10547252_778821665515211_2020775318_n.jpg) DD and I shopped the Toledo Farmers Market. We bought lettuce greens from a local producer, which is the company who wants to expand inside one of the Erie Street Market bays. We also purchased: eggs, two loaves of Proof 419 bread, onions, squash, Bea's Blend coffee beans, sunflowers for display in our dining room, and I think that was it. ![](https://scontent-sjc2-1.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-ak-xap1/10499283_792362220784520_1029893117_n.jpg) ![](https://scontent-sjc2-1.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-ak-xpa1/10561214_1444749209142514_1221748898_n.jpg) Inside the market, it was less crowded by the time that we arrived, which was later than normal. ![](https://scontent-sjc2-1.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-ak-xpa1/10507940_1435985366682783_1370178853_n.jpg) ![](https://scontent-sjc2-1.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-ak-xpa1/10520378_440266052782914_1054012485_n.jpg) ![](https://scontent-sjc2-1.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-ak-xpf1/10499201_349908815159680_589132076_n.jpg) ![](http://scontent-b.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-xap1/l/t51.2885-15/10488651_1458024164446562_1957386927_n.jpg) ![](http://scontent-a.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-xfp1/t51.2885-15/891445_1455228061397160_200733561_n.jpg) It was a cool, fall-like day for mid-July. ![](http://scontent-a.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-xfa1/t51.2885-15/10549846_770951052927843_1348756048_n.jpg) The farmers market is located across from the Erie Street Market, which houses the Libbey Glass outlet store. ![](http://scontent-b.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-xap1/t51.2885-15/928044_639573586137980_444671193_n.jpg) Swan Creek located on the other side of the farmers market parking lot. ![](https://scontent-sjc2-1.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-ak-xpa1/925322_681458145261798_218767271_n.jpg) We walked along the north side of the Libbey outlet store. DD and I shared a farmer's scrambled egg mashup, comprised of numerous veggies. We also shared a cherry almond scone made by a Sylvania bakery called Earth to Oven. Toledo's weather on Jul 19, 2014 was cloudy day with low, hefty, fall-like, blue-grey clouds, and light wind with temps only in the low to mid 70s at Noon. While at Black Kite, DD and I browsed her book on canning and preserving foods for possible new things to try this summer and fall in addition to our favorites that DD has canned in the past. We left Black Kite at 1:30 pm. ### Back Home We stopped at the Art Supply Depot to buy advance SoundTrek wristbands at $10 a piece. I wanted to shop inside the store for other items, but the Mud Hens played a mid-day baseball game, which is unusual for a Saturday. I think that it was a makeup game. Anyway, no parking spots were available, unless we wanted to pay $5. I dropped DD off, drove around the block, and we were on our way. We got home at 2:05 pm. The West Toledo Wunderground personal weather station (WTWS) reported 72 degrees at 2:15 pm. The sky was still cloudy with low clouds. Temps actually dropped between late morning and early afternoon. Now this is my idea of perfect summer weather. Toledo express airport: Jul 19, 2014 1:52 pm Weather : Overcast Temperature : 70 F Humidity : 71% Wind Speed : E 5 mph Barometer : 30.08 in Dewpoint: 60 F Visibility : 10.00 statute miles I tended to our backyard garden for a little while. We could use the rain. This was our square-foot garden as of Sat, Jul 19, 2014. The garden contained three raised beds, framed by boards. Each bed was 9 feet by 4 feet, which produced a total of 108 square feet. Only about one foot of space existed between the framed beds. I squeezed the garden into our tiny backyard, among the Oak Openings native plants. ![](https://scontent-sjc2-1.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-ak-xap1/10560939_782016615176289_1942545457_n.jpg) ### Beer Brewing At about 3:30 pm, we began the process to [brew a one-gallon batch of Belgian Dubbel](http://birdbrainsbrewing.com/fox-sparrow-dubbel-july-2014.html). The recipe came from the [new book](https://brooklynbrewshop.com/collections/accessories/products/brooklyn-brew-shop-make-some-beer-book), produced by the [Brooklyn Beer Shop](https://brooklynbrewshop.com/). We started the mash at 3:35 pm. I forgot to take a photo of the mash process. Basically, the grains steep in the water. The water barely covers the grains. Water temp is maintained between 144 to 152 degrees. We sparged for around 15 minutes. ![](https://scontent-sjc2-1.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-ak-xap1/10538688_414686412003840_321152190_n.jpg) The wort has a brown color, typical of dubbels. Trippels have yellow colors. The boil started at 5:14 pm. ![](https://scontent-sjc2-1.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-ak-xaf1/10561170_758218854240198_727558864_n.jpg) While brewing, we drank [our excellent Belgian Trippel that we brewed](http://birdbrainsbrewing.com/tricolored-heron-trippel-june-2014.html) last month, and we ate the Proof 419 bread from this morning's farmers market visit. That bread uses beer from the Maumee Bay Brewing Company. ![](https://scontent-sjc2-1.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-ak-xfa1/10570028_745725458825925_1803710181_n.jpg) ![](https://scontent-sjc2-1.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-ak-xpf1/10534847_262685930606833_2145535489_n.jpg) The wort-chilling process began at 6:15 pm, and it was done chilling at 6:44 pm when wort temp reached 72 degrees. Close enough. Book said to chill to 70 degrees. ![](https://scontent-sjc2-1.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-ak-xpa1/10520312_514322558667734_308048006_n.jpg) Once cooled, we poured the wort through a funnel and into the carboy, added the yeast, shook the carboy to distribute the yeast, and added the cap. ![](https://scontent-sjc2-1.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-ak-xap1/10525518_1582134615346524_1131630630_n.jpg) I moved the carboy into the dining room. I added the blow-off tubing at 6:58 pm. ![](https://scontent-sjc2-1.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-ak-xap1/10554087_556781207759247_785820995_n.jpg) It was a 3.5 hour process to brew a one-gallon batch of beer when using the all-grains method. Toledo temps at 7:00 p.m. were in the low 70s. ### SoundTrek 2014 Excerpts from the Toledo Arts Commission website: > SoundTrek is an annual live local music experience featuring nearly 40 bands at 10 venues along Adams Street in UpTown Toledo in one single night. > This is an all local celebration of Toledo's rich live music heritage with music ranging from rock, pop, and hip-hop to blues, jazz, R&B, Americana and more. > SoundTrek 2014 will take place on Saturday, July 19, 7pm-12am. > Wristbands are $10 advance and $15 night of ($5 single venue admission). To purchase wristbands, buy online at , call 419-254-2787 or email us. > Tickets may also be purchased in person at the following locations: The Arts Commission, Art Supply Depo, Culture Clash Records, Friendly Beaver Records, Loonar Station (Cricket West), Ottawa Tavern, and The Attic on Adams. ![](https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7662/27059264754_bca1375e0f_z.jpg) At 8:01 p.m. we parked in a lot across the Manos restaurant. Temps remained comfortable. The sky cleared some in the late afternoon and evening, so the sun was shining with scattered clouds, which always produces some interesting imagery in the sky. ![](http://scontent-a.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-xpa1/t51.2885-15/10518116_731012263625606_1874293363_n.jpg) ![](http://scontent-b.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-xpa1/t51.2885-15/1941128_661218483947486_442834715_n.jpg) We walked down Adams Street toward the [Toledo School for the Arts.](http://www.ts4arts.org) Some food trucks were present. ![](https://scontent-sjc2-1.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-ak-xap1/10554069_1438326709774598_1146606987_n.jpg) ![](https://scontent-sjc2-1.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-ak-xpf1/10488601_734337406626779_314202378_n.jpg) Students from the TSA performed outside their building on the sidewalk along Adams Street. When I entered the OT, a female member of the band played a trumpet with one hand and the keyboards with her other hand. They sounded good too. At 10:47 p.m., while walking along Adams Street toward Wesley's, we watched a guy sling flaming nun-chucks in a small open field. Another guy elsewhere along Adams Street played his acoustic guitar and harmonica while signing. We briefly watched a good singer at The Moxie Live, located near Wesley's. The rock/R&B singer or group was called SQ'air. We sat down on Wesley's patio at 10:50 pm. Great setting. The bands played on a dusty bocce ball court. The patio was surrounded on two sides by ivy-covered brick walls of neighboring buildings, and wooden fencing bordered the other two sides. Small trees existed along the edge of the patio. Amazing weather. The talented rock band called Nathan Roberts & The New Birds started playing at Wesley's around 11:15 p.m.. They ended at midnight. I think they played all original material. They sold CDs. At about 12:30 a.m. at Wesley's, the Irish punk band called Katies Randy Cat began playing. The four-member group featured Toledo City Councilman Steve Steel as the lead singer. Steel also jammed on the accordion. It was a fun band. The patio was jumping. ![](https://scontent-sjc2-1.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-ak-xpa1/10488643_1508639916039241_1178495504_n.jpg) A few of the songs that Steel's band played included: Molly Malone, Drunken Sailor, Foggy Dew, and I'm Shipping Up To Boston. Steve's band ended at 1:19 am. At 1:30 a.m., DD and I were back upstairs at the Attic for another LaTrappe Dubbel. We left the Attic for home at 2:00 a.m. The Attic and the patio were still busy when we left. ![](https://scontent-sjc2-1.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-ak-xaf1/10570057_645943152183672_50090739_n.jpg) We arrived home at 2:16 a.m. It was a great night and a fun day in T-town. .
