Another day, another word. Today I was reading a law article, which at the best of times are hard to follow due to the overly convoluted natured of "lawyer speak". A line referenced a detective who eschewed being described as a forensic expert. WTF? According to Cambridge online dictionary, eschew means steer clear of or avoid something. So the detective was being careful not to describe himself as being an expert. Personally, I wouldn't use the word "eschew", but maybe "avoid" instead. I think it is pretentious to use words where a large proportion of the general population are not sure of the meaning. --- bradmac@sdf.org 22/05/2019
