=============================================================================== Title: A New Journey Date: 25-11-2022 =============================================================================== My last update is three months old. Here's what happened in recent time: 1. I completed my thesis with great results. The implementation works fine and the results are as good as expected. 2. I got my MSc in October with full marks and distinction. 3. I have started my PhD at the beginning of November. My daily routine hasn't changed much - except that I get to the office at 9 a.m. and leave at 6 p.m. At the moment I'm going through a learning phase. Maybe someone would call it a slow start, full of muddled notes - both on paper and in LaTeX. By the way, in the next days I would like to talk more in detail about the tools I use as a PhD student in Theoretical Chemistry. A very cumbersome element in my life is legacy code in Fortran. Our group have been developing a solid-state quantum simulation software for more than 40 years. It is one of the most used in this field: it is robust, reliable, powerful and versatile. But its code is a damn mess. Zero documentation, zero comments. Just a few million lines of cryptic code, whose authors are mostly disappeared or dead. One subroutine in particular is driving me crazy. I'd be curious to know if anyone has similar experiences with software developed in academia - where good practices are not a thing.
