ffog OCC3 Last Day ================== MOD file mix ------------ For my weekly mix on aNONradio (https://anonradio.net), I wanted to keep up the OCC challenge up and use the iBook as my audio source. So I did some digging around The Mod Archive (https://modarchive.org) while at work and collected a pile of my favorite type of MOD files-- strange ones. There's something enduring to me about the power of people throwing together crazy sounds at home and creating music for themselves and their friends. download the mix: https://archives.anonradio.net/202307140100_ffog.mp3 I gave the audio a bit of a boost by routing the iBook through a dbx DDP hardware compressor/processor and then into an audio interface on a linux machine. This was quite fun, and I found some artists I will continue to explore. After streaming, I started to play around with changing the pitch and tempo of the MOD files, creating some interesting results which I then recorded and used as the backing audio for an experimental video stream I've been doing with some friends. Laptops ------- After using this iBook during the week, it got me curious about comparing it to some of the other detritus I've accumulated in the closet. I picked this machine because the battery works, but I started comparing everything about a pile of laptops I accumulated and thinking about what the ideal laptop to me would be. Its interesting to have a bunch of stuff next to each other for reference. There's alot to say about the subject but in summary, the PowerBook3,2 has the best keyboard out of the group by far. The Eee PC and X61 are on the right track with short palm rests. Big arrow keys should be standard. Laptops shouldn't be about computing power (unless you have a rare use case). Screens need to go back far enough to lay back in bed and have it propped up against you. Focus ----- Probably the most important subject I came back to during OCC is about focus. If you're focused on doing one thing, the computer doesn't matter so much. Where one runs into problems is multitasked consuming and having lots of stuff open. Older computers are not about CONTENT, another obvious realization that I had. The place to 'fix' what has caused suckage is out there in relationships in the world and within. Summary ------- A good summary may come later with some time. For now I will link my www where I will be posting some pictures and a web friendly summary. http://wrasse.pw/~ffog/occ3/ Thanks ------ To everyone involved in organizing OCC, thank you! Also I've had good chats and met interesting people on the IRC and Mastodon. Bitching about modern computing can seem negative but I found the experience a positive one. See you around :) July 16, 2023
