(2024-05-28) A Mistake --------------------------------------------------------------------- So I replaced the hard drive in the laptop. Today I encountered the same issue with the file system going read-only. It seems that btrfs (I was using Fedora) will make the file system read only in certain circumstances when it encounters an error. Thats fine I guess, at least now I have a much faster SSD in this old machine. Except during the replacement (which involved taking both the bottom and top covers off and removing the keyboard) the ribbon cable that connects to the keyboard was damaged and now the laptop no longer has a keyboard connected. The only way I can see to repair this issue is to replace the motherboard, but that would likely cost more than the worth of the laptop, so now I have to use an external keyboard, severely reducing the portability of the device. Regarding the issue I have found with btrfs and Fedora, I have resolved this by installing Debian instead :-) You live and learn, I guess. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
