Printing ======== The long-term home office requires printer. One needs to print some documents to be able to use them without computer (we both are people who canoe effectively read and correct documents on computer screen) and sometimes also print, sign and sent them to some places. Thus a printer is needed. We have had the LasetJet (one of of the 1200 versions, I think) for more than 10 years. It always worked until it died. There were some issues with its limited RAM (8 MB or so) which make modern documents almost unprintable (by "modenr" I mean these produced by Libre/OpenOffice, MS Office, documents generated by various on-line services - the Czech state railways ahve been one of the most terrible and the most needed). In the end I had to recycle it. The I got another one but it was terribly damaged during shipping). So we have not printer ad home for more than year. It was no issue for the most of time but it have became a problem when the COVID emergency started. There have been several situation when it was necessary to print some documents. Now it is clear so these home office periods will repeat so we decided to got a home printer. A black and white laser one as we know from the past that it is just what we need (I never had to replace the LasetJet toner which I got with my old printer - the machine died before when it still wasn't empty). So we have got a HP M203dn printer. It wasn't too expensive, it understands PCL (4/5/6) and the PostScript. And it is networked one (there was no USB cable bundled with printer but it of course has the USB). I configured our router to accept the printer (it uses the DHCL). Then found and configured it in my Fedora/ppc64le. It started to work without issues. Then tried to configure my wife's Ubuntu/amd64. It was not necessary as the printer was automatically detected and configured (I only have set is as a default printer). Then I tried the hardest part: make it available form my SGI IRIS Indigo as a PostScript printer. I opened the GUI configuration panel, entered the printer IP address and its desired name (I have choosen the "LaserJet") and it started to work! So 1991 machine can print on the modern (2019 or so) HP pronter without any problems! That's crazy! Bravo HP!
