Seiko DATA-2000

After long decision process I finally have got the DATA-2000 smartwatch
(just like these  ones [1], sans the manual). Well,  it's a device from
1980s so they are not as "smart" as modern things called "smartwatch".

They  are  digital  watches  that  can   show  time,  data  (day  in  a
month,  actually) and  which have  (rather basic)  stopwatch and  alarm
functionalities.

That's almost  all that  they have. Except  one special  function: they
have two data areas called "Memo A"  and "Memo B". These can be used to
store texts  (up to 1000  characters long) which  can be viewed  on the
watch's  LCD screen.  To enter  the  text one  has to  use an  external
keyboard, however.

It seems to be crazy and impractical today but it must be almost sci-fi
technology when it was new.

I have got them  for practical reasons - I don't  like to carry/use the
smartphone  (or  PDA) when  doing  shopping.  And  I don't  use  modern
smartwatches (I  have terrible experience  with the WearOS ones  and my
Pebble just have entered another round of issues).

Thus these ones  have been looking like a good  solution - a wristwatch
which  can carry  my shopping  list  or To  Do  list (the  text can  be
arbitrary so it's compatible with the  todo.txt !).


Mine DATA-2000 aren't  in perfect condition, of course.  There are some
dead pixels on  two of characters in the bottom  left corner. Actually,
one line from  the letter matrix is missing in  both characters. I hope
that this issue will not continue to expand.

The only other  functionality I found so far is  the calculator. But it
is very  limited (it can do  just + - *  /) and it only  works when the
external keyboard  is attached (there  is no  way to enter  the numbers
without this keyboard).

Surprisingly, LCD contrast seems to be  good for normal use (the screen
is not backlit, however).  So I think I will try to  use them during my
net shopping run...
