Biofeedback when I was 11 yrs old. 43 soon. Wasn't called meditation but it was just breathing in for 6 seconds, holding for 6 seconds, breathing out. There was some creative visualization [being a warm bottle lying in the sand... breathing through your feet] etc. Anyway, it works. I added cigarettes in my 20s to the breathing (socially acceptable excuse to get away from ppl in order to breath) alas - but yeah, it works. Doesn't have to be fancy, although it can be. When i was going through my Eastern Orthodox thing I was playing around with the prayer rope thing - the knotted rope and the "Jesus Prayer" that you repeat. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner" Or when I was in 3rd grade, I'd walk home and chant, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me" or when I was a Boy Scout "I will do my duty to do my best to God and my country to help other people at all times to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight" [or something like that, I'm sure I messed the words up after all these year] or "helpful friendly courteous kind obedient cheerful thrifty brave clean and reverent" or "two all beef patties special sauce lettuce cheese pickles onions on a sesame-seed bun" They all work for repetitive phrases to keep the mind calm.
