I believe we do. Look at bacteria: they communicate in a way
   that comprehensible to humans. Using chemical signalling (which
   is communication), they have what we might call an "this is us"
   sense and a "this is not us" sense. They communicate with their
   comrades as well as their enemies, so to speak.

   Is this conscious awareness? I see no reason why it wouldn't be.
