   preferred religious (in the broad sense of "ideology", not the
   narrow 'supernatural' definition) doctrine.

   Secularism is an established doctrine in the USA and is promoted
   by the state.

   Atheism is considered a religious choice in the USA.

   They seem similar on the surface but they're diferent.
