I believe you are correct, Wayne smile emoticon Mathematics is a marvelous explanatory tool. QM gives mathematicians (and the physicists that use the same techniques) more mathematical flexibility in an area that would be difficult to explore experimentally. They're allowed to do things like borrow from imaginary Time (like borrowing from the past to pay for the present, like a credit card, except more like borrowing from a parallel dimension, kinda like borrowing your mother's credit card) - BUT ONLY MATHEMATICALLY. The mistake is when they believe the math corresponds to reality. QM knowingly trades in minor fictions so that we can result in greater facts. This is what it's for. You make energy come out of nothing so long as you give nothing its energy back quickly. It doesn't mean you're *actually* borrowing energy from nothing, or implying that there even *IS* a nothing to borrow from... but they're mathematical tricks, allowed in QM but not in classical. That's its power.
