I still think it'd be possible via some kind of scaffolding of
   the gauges themselves. Invert the situation as it were. More of
   an engineering issue than a mathematical one. But yeah, this is
   just a sci-fi notion I wrote down 13 years ago in a little
   notebook I had. Probably one of those 'just woke up and omg that
   makes sense!" thoughts. I get them a lot smile emoticon
