Well, it's been quite a while since my last update on this particular gopherspace so I felt it only appropriate for me to post *something* here and in this case I felt like writing a little bit about my Bulletin Board System Final Zone. With a bit of trouble due to me having the incorrect version of a Microsoft runtime library installed (something I managed to resolve easily enough once I realized it was the cause for upgrade failures) I got the version of Synchronet the BBS is running upgraded to 3.18b. This version provides quite a few nice features and makes some adjustments I really like to some special menus, but to fully take advtantage of some of this I had to actually hand-edit some sections to make them match what a "new" install of the software would provide. It wasn't as hard as I thought it might be, just a bit tedious. I've finally installed a reasonable collection of door games, like LORD, Trade Wars, and even a gopher browser for the BBS -- that's right, you can browse Gopherspace on Final Zone, which is really only of benefit to people who may be on the BBS via odd computer setups, like me using my Commodore 128. That's pretty damn neat to me, at least! Other than that I've set up a backup script which isn't the best but it will work - all it does is in the morning make a copy of the sbbs folder, dump that copy into a backups folder with the name of the day of the week the backup was made as the folder name. If that folder is presen the script deletes that already existing folder and then makes the copy, meaning I should always have the last weeks worth of BBS data available. Should something happen I'd hopefully only lose a days worth of activity, if even that! Well, that's me being optimistic for once. Don't say I am not doing my best with this little hobby I've picked up over the past year. It's nice, escaping social media and the like. In a way knowing very few people will be able to see the words I type here actually makes me feel better about just writing whatever comes to mind. I miss the simpler days... but that's another story. ~Chris 5:14 PM 9/27/2020
