The Last Cricket The chirping of crickets fills the yard during the fall. They are everywhere. Sadly, this year there were as many as usual. I removed some of their hiding place in the yard. In particular, there was a platform I had made for the trash cans. It seemed to breed crickets every year. I removed that and mended some cracks in the concrete that allowed entrance into my house. There were no crickets heard in the basement area this year. The crickets seemed to enjoy hanging around the furnace as the nights grew cooler. Then, as time went on, one cricket would chirp alone. The little bug sang out loudly. It gave it all his might to keep their song alive. Often the last cricket held its ground against winter through the end of November into the early days of December. Then there would be silence. Is there a lesson here? I could come up with some profound thoughts. But, for now, I simply miss the sound of crickets in my basement.
