============================================================== Rice Update - Sept. 28, 2019 ============================================================== I've been working on this rice for quite a while now. It's my first linux rice. Dual booting Windows and Linux on an old HP Notebook 15 I got on New Years Day back in 2012 for like $400. I installed Kubuntu as my distrobution because I wanted to see how I liked the KDE Plasma desktop environment, but I quickly discovered i3 and switched over. After many months running gapless, I switched again to i3-gaps, and that's where I am now. I use urxvt as my terminal, and have pywal generating colorschemes based on whatever wallpaper I choose. I like using terminal based applications whenever possible (preferably with vim bindings!), so I have many apps with that in mind. Ranger for file browsing, Calcurse for a calendar and Todo list, ncmpcpp for music, mps-youtube for browsing YouTube, neomutt for email, nmtui for managing Wi-Fi connections, lynx for browsing gopherspace. And of course, I use vim as my editor of choice! In terms of non-tui/cli programs, I use qutebrowser when I'm not using lynx, and firefox when all else fails. sxiv for viewing images, as well as a custom wallpaper choosing script I made. Discord for when I need that (although I usually just use the mobile app on my phone). Tusk is my Evernote client, and I use it very frequently given that I write a lot. For word processing, I've been using AbiWord, although I think I might look into a replacement for that in the future. You can see a screenshot of my main workspace under the link to this update on my tech page! ----------------- I've been looking into buying a new laptop recently. This one does pretty well for a cheap machine that's almost 8 years old, But the fan is like a hair dryer under even a moderate load. I think I'm going to splurge a bit and buy a Dell XPS 15 for around $1000. My friend has one and it seems like exactly what I'm looking for. I'd like to install Arch Linux on that machine, and build a whole new rice from scratch. Although I'm sure I'll port over some scripts and files that I've come to rely on, or like the look/flow of. If you have any questions about my rice, be it software or hardware, feel free to send me an email! Email: nynergy@sdf.org
