Just a couple tips. Follow the help files but I had problems when I did. the mkgopher command is your friend. 1st get the sample gophermap it does work. You will have to create your own gophermap file but use it as an example. You can download it from my files section. 2nd the gophermap file is sensitive to permissions. It should be 640. if you have executable set on the file it will not load, it will execute this can be cool if it's expected, however... don't do that. Also any file which has gophermap in the name will try to chain load. So you can't do something like gophermap_old or the like. remember the tabs not spaces in the gophermap file. Also your gopher will not show up in sdf's lists right away. It takes a little while. If However you have a phlog then you can run the phlog command and things will show up right away.
