We had my brother over earlier and played some games, then we were supposed to have my fiance's sister and boyfriend over, but the boyfriend wasn't feeling good and went home. So we are bringing her sister with us. Other than that, it's not been a very eventful day. We cleaned up a bunch and got everything looking nice again. Her sister wanted some shrimp, so we cooked that. I'm off the hook for work this weekend, for the most part. I still have a few projects to touch up on, but it's a lot less urgent than I had originally thought yesterday. I have some thoughts on research, but I'm not sure the best way to express them, and I suspect it's mostly born of frustration. In short, I wonder sometimes how much merit there is in the whole academic model of research where the main contribution is a paper. I get that it's a way to introduce peer review and some degree of accountability, which are good, but when it's your own work and you're hoping that it will make a difference in people's lives, sometimes you just want to release it yourself and skip this whole thing -- that maybe that would be enough to make an impact. On the flip side, our work isn't really useful on its own, but as a catalyst for future work. So releasing it on its own wouldn't make much of an impact because we didn't design it to be usable, moreso to propose an idea. I don't know. I'm not jaded about research (yet?), but I wish it were a little easier sometimes. -,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-` Recipe: Modified Shrimp Pasta Thaw 12-15 frozen, no-tail, deveined shrimp in luke warm water. Heat up a cast iron pan with some olive oil. Add the shrimp and coat with a generous amount of salt/pepper. Cook on each side for 2-3 minutes then transfer to an extra bowl. While all of that is happening, boil some angel hair pasta for 4 minutes, drain, and set aside. Add 3-4 oz of water to the pan and stir to get everything off the bottom. Add to it some more olive oil, some roasted garlic, some garlic powder, red pepper flakes, and some brown sugar. Reduce for a little bit before adding the shrimp and noodles. Stir well and serve. -,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-` We usually make it like this. Recipe: Shrimp Pasta Thaw shrimp. Add to shrimp a generous coating of marinade, made from: olive oil, minced garlic, brown sugar, soy sauce, parmesan cheese, and red pepper flakes [1]. Let sit for 15-30 minutes. Heat up any old pan. Once hot, add the shrimp and marinade together. Let cook for a long time [2]. Cook some noodles and add them to a bowl. Then add some shrimp to the bowl and some of the sauce on top. [1]: Probably something else I'm forgetting. I don't usually make the marinade. [2]: My fiance and her sister like to cook shrimp until it's super done. It tastes fine, but I've never really had very good shrimp before. Regardless, I try to cook mine a little less. -,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`-,-`
