The blood thinning tablets seem to be doing their job as I haven't suffered a pulmonary embolism due to a part of the clot breaking off in my calf, and travelling via my heart to my lungs. I feel completely normal except for a little lump in my calf that hurts if I push it. I am in Vietnam lying beside a pool sipping on a drink. This is the last week of a 6 week odyssey through southeast Asia starting in Singapore, moving on to Malaysia and finishing up here in Vietnam. I've kept a blog at https://bradmac.id.au/blog if you are interested. (TXT) Continued... +++ Holidays Soon! +++ Tuesday, April 03, 2018 It's been frantic at work. Normally I have an offsider who shares the workload but he's been absent on a week's leave and some other commitments prior to that and he wasn't replaced. I've got double the workload, and it's monthly reporting time. At times like this I often feel that I'm getting past my time here and retirement sounds pretty good. (TXT) Continued... +++ The Long Road to Fitness +++ Monday, March 19, 2018 As already phlogged, I have been recovering from a hernia operation since the 18th of January this year. It has been more painful and debilitating than I ever expected. Anyway, my hobbies are mucking around with computers, bike riding and weight lifting. During my recovery I have not done any bike riding or weight lifting until last week. (TXT) Continued... +++ Coffee Snob Protest +++ Wednesday, February 28, 2018 I was reading through some phlogs today and came across this: gopher://sdf.org:70/0/users/solderpunk/phlog/against-connoisseurship.txt Solderpunk asserts that Australia and New Zealand are coffee neophytes and that we have no idea of how to drink coffee. I protest! (TXT) Continued... +++ TV Binge +++ Thursday, February 08, 2018 It's been nearly a month since my last post. I've been recuperating from an inguinal hernia operation. The first week after the operation I was suffering a fair bit of pain and had to be very careful doing all normal daily activity. Getting out of bed required pre-planning and careful execution to avoid too much stress on my abdominal muscles. Ditto for sitting down on a chair, standing back up again, even going to the toilet. I've been catching up on some phlogs at SDF, and one in particular has raised my interest - contact managment using text based files with vim and ranger, written by dbucklin: gopher://sdf.org/0/users/dbucklin/posts/2018-01-06-ranger-vim-crm.markdown (TXT) Continued... Sunday, January 14th, 2018 Two posts in three days - something must be up! (TXT) Continued... Friday, January 12th, 2018 It's been a while, but I've got a pretty good excuse. My father died on 29/12/2017. He was 81 years old. Not a bad innings. He's been quite ok over Christmas and seemed to be happy, even if he was not eating much, but did enjoy some red wine. (TXT) Continued... Friday, November 17th, 2017 Well I've been back at work for a week now and have nearly caught up with everything that wasn't done while I was on holidays. Of course, someone else was delegated to perform my role while I was gone, but it never really works out for many reasons - one of which is because I'm irreplaceable ;-) (TXT) Continued... Monday, October 23th, 2017 I'm on holidays now! I love holidays. It's not that I hate work, it's just that I like being on holidays a lot better. No deadlines, no-one criticising how I've done things or what I haven't done, not having to get out of bed at 6:15 a.m. The list goes on and on. (TXT) Continued... Monday, October 16th, 2017 One of my interests in life is weightlifting. It's an unusual sport with only a fairly limited amount of publicity. The only goal is to lift more weight than your opponents. That's it. Simple. It is the test of absolute human physical effort. It's awesome to watch these people lifting incredible weights. (TXT) Continued... Sunday, October 08th, 2017 I'm sorry to say that I've left SDF. Well, as a web host provider anyway. I've been frustrated with my php pages being unusable for a while now due to regular internal server 500 errors. This was an intermittent thing and I was confident it wasn't my pages causing the errors - they hadn't changed and I had not fiddled with anything such as structure or permissions in my html folder. (TXT) Continued... Sunday, October 01th, 2017 It's been a hell of a week and into the weekend at work. I was called out to a job at 0105hrs this morning. It's never pleasant having to do that. I've finished and got back home to grab a few hours sleep. Now I'm looking at my todo.txt list. (TXT) Continued... Sunday, September 24th, 2017 Yesterday was my 57th birthday. We celebrated the day by smoking a 3.8kg port butt. My 25 year old son has come home after moving out a couple of years ago - to save up some money to start his own business. (TXT) Continued... Wednesday, September 13th, 2017 I've been having some issues with my PHP pages throwing internal server errors on my pages at bradmac.freeshell.org This is one of those irritating intermittent faults that comes and goes. I'm pretty sure it's not my pages causing the issues as I haven't done anything to them for a couple of weeks. The problem with SDF is it is pretty much run by one person - the mysterious smj. He seems pretty choosey to whom he replies to on bboard. I've posted a couple of times on bboard and got no response - but my PHP pages did start working for a day, then started having error messages again the next. I posted again on bboard and again the problem was fixed. I'd like some feedback on what the problem was. (TXT) Continued... Friday, September 08th, 2017 Continuing with my father's health issues, he got home from hospital the day before yesterday. My mother was quite nervous about this, but luckily my brother from England was here for a 2 week holiday and is with them for a couple more days before heading home. (TXT) Continued... Saturday, September 02th, 2017 So it's been extremely busy at work and I haven't had much time to do what I want to do. I had planned to take part in a fund raising bicycle ride in September. A nice 100km jaunt. One does not just get on one's bike and ride 100km. A little training must be partaken to achieve the necessary level of fitness. I had good intentions, but have only been able to do a 50km ride once every second week. Not enough. It was causing me stress knowing I was not going to be prepared. I've had to withdraw - which is sad. (TXT) Continued... Wednesday, August 23th, 2017 My father had a fall last week and ended up in hospital - where he still remains. He ended up with a terrible case of pneumonia, which on top of his congestive heart failure led to the situation last week where he nearly died. (TXT) Continued... Friday, August 18th, 2017 My father nearly died yesterday. He's 82 years old next month. He lives at home in Mansfield, a country town in Victoria, Australia with my mother. They are self sufficient but dad has really slowed down since he turned 80. His health has been up and down over the last couple of years and we've thought he was gone for sure more than once. (TXT) Continued... Sunday, August 13th, 2017 One of my passions in life is bike riding. Today I rode 70km with a couple of work colleagues. The ride was along an old railway line in south eastern Victoria, Australia, which has been converted into a rail trail. We started at Leongatha and rode 35km to Fish Creek via Koonwarra, Meeniyan, Stony Creek and Buffalo. Had lunch at the pub then turned around to head back. Had a bit of a head wind and it was a long climb out of Fish Creek (not steep, but went on for about 7km). Had a coffee and caramel slice in Meeniyan. We were all feeling quite fatigued by Koonwarra, and the last 10km was pretty hard. (TXT) Continued... Thursday, August 10th, 2017 We are implementing a new surveying system at work - moving from 2D total survey stations to 3D lidar scanning. We are using proprietory software to process the point cloud. I want to learn more about how point cloud processing works. I'm looking for open source software that runs on Linux to play with at home. (TXT) Continued... Monday, August 07th, 2017 While talking about mental health, I thought I'd mention a couple of techniques that have helped me get over some low level anxiety and poor mood. (TXT) Continued... Saturday, August 05th, 2017 Ok. So I've made it to my second phlog. So far, so good. I am 57 years old next month. My workplace ran a retirement seminar the other day. I'm not sure it was what I thought it would be. I imagined talk about tranisition to retirement strategies at work, financial planning, investment advice - stuff like that. Well, it wasn't like that at all. The focus was on retiring with good mental health. You need to have your mental health in order before you retire. The statistics on male suicide rates in Australia are frightening. The rate for retirees is on the bad end of the scale. (TXT) Continued... Thursday, August 03th, 2017 My First Phlog.
