-------------------------------------------- Reducing my digital footprint 2018.01.23 21:56:59 CET -------------------------------------------- One of my goals for 2018 is to reduce my digital footprint. My wife has always told me I have too much stuff, but I just dismissed her comments because I had an use - or an excuse - for each device. This year I decided to simplify my life on many different aspects, including my digital footprint. These are the devices I had running: * Dell T3500 workstation, running OpenBSD and used mostly as a backup storage machine (24TB of disks). * Self-built desktop, running FreeBSD and used mostly as my remote workstation (I did my coding, building, testing etc. on it). Another 48TB of disks. * Two raspberry pi's 2B, used as a Tor relay server and IPFS host. * One Synology DS415+ (16TB) serving media. * One Synology DS415+ (8TB) as a TimeMachine and rsync server. * One FreeNAS Mini (24TB) running different jails and applications, mostly my personal cloud server. * One MacBook Pro which was my portable machine, until I switched for: * An iPad Pro, used almost exclusively as an SSH client. * A few other VPS running Tor relays and other services. It's pretty obvious there are too many devices on that list, so I'm working on shutting down unnecessary devices. My plan is to drop down to: * FreeNAS Mini for backup, TimeMachine and rsync server. * One Synology DS415+ for media. * MBP for coding and project work. * The two raspberry pi's will continue running. I've already canceled the extra VPS'es. The iPad has already been taken over by my kids. I'll shutdown the extra Synology NAS and both larger machines - after a couple of months I'll either keep them for spare parts, sell or donate them.
