-------------------------------------------- It's everyone's fault 2018.10.13 12:30:21 CEST -------------------------------------------- Some of you might have read my brief mention of the Brazilian elections or seen the John Oliver segment on Last Week Tonight about these elections. The first round ended with one big surprise: the conservative candidate (Bolsonaro) had 46% of the valid votes. People already expected Bolsonaro and Haddad to go head-to-head during the second round of votes, but few expected such large numbers. Polls for the second round point towards a 60/40 split for Bolsonaro. Online and offline reaction has been very inflamed and violent some times, for both sides. We have to choose between a rock and a hard a place - I honestly can't support either of them, but I understand arguments for and against each one. To me, the biggest looser is going to be everyone. There is no rational dialog. Scratch that. There is no dialog. It is not surprising the public is becoming more polarized and each side can't understand the other. Maybe living abroad has made it easier to see or it's just much of what I am learning about Swiss society, how it manages to have frequent referendums and still not collapse with all the opposing view-points disagreeing so often. It doesn't matter who wins. All Brazilians, we lost. It's not going to get better either.
