-------------------------------------------- Silver bullets 2018.08.05 21:33:04 CEST -------------------------------------------- At work I'm very conscious of the inexistence of silver bullets. There isn't a single piece of infra-structure which will solve everyone's demand. Not because people aren't willing to invest time trying to build such a solution, but due to the diverse nature of the use-cases around the company. Yet, I keep finding myself searching for a single silver bullet to solve my personal computing needs. For example, trying to get everything done on a single machine, running a single operating system, on a single online platform. When I become disappointed with the current silver bullet of the month, I move to a different laptop, or OS, or platform, rinse and repeat. In a month I'll be disappointed again and move back. Finding a place in between extremes, using more platforms, more OSes, more machines, will probably solve all my needs, with the additional cost of complexity. The cost of moving so often between solutions has become higher than the complexity cost. I won't be satisfied at a single place - this is the mantra for the next time disappointment comes around.
