John Carmack John Carmack is a brilliant legendary programmer that's contributed mostly to [1]computer graphics and stands behind engines of such [2]games as [3]Doom, [4]Wolfenstein and [5]Quake. He helped pioneer real-time 3D graphics, created many [6]hacks and [7]algorithms (e.g. the reverse shadow volume algorithm). He is also a rocket [8]engineer. ____ /_____\ |O-O''@ | _ | \____/ [9]ASCII art of John Carmack He's kind of the ridiculously stereotypical [10]nerd with glasses that just from the way he talks gives out the impression of someone with high functioning [11]autism. You can just sense his [12]IQ is over 9000. Some nice [13]shit about him can be read in the (sadly [14]proprietary) book Masters of Doom. Carmack is a proponent of [15]FOSS and has released his old game engines as such which gave rise to an enormous amount of modifications, forked engines and even new games (e.g. [16]Freedoom and [17]Xonotic). He's probably leaning more towards the dark side of the source: the [18]open-source. In 2021 Carmack tweeted that he would have rather licensed his old Id engines under a permissive BSD [19]license than the [20]GPL, which is good. In 2013 he sadly sold his soul to [21]Facebook to work on [22]VR (in a Facebook owned company Oculus).
